The house felt like a stranger's embrace to Avery. He kept checking the locks, the windows, as though an intruder was imminent. His brother, Caleb, was whistling, a nervous habit that did nothing to soothe his brother's feelings.

The shadows lengthened across the floor, and the house began to groan and creak around them. A cold draft snaked through the rooms, raising the hairs on Avery's arms. He felt a desperate urge to run, to escape the confines of the house. "Let's just get this over with," he said, his voice a tense whisper.
